Nourishment

We visited the Butterfly Conservatory last week.
Most of the butterflies were busy; busy finding
and taking nourishment. Most found sweet nectar in
flowers; some found it in a dish of fruit set out.
As you are proceeding with your cancer treatments, one very important thing is nourishment. Food for you body, but also "food" for your mind, your spirit and your soul.
Hopefully, you have someone at home, or someone who comes to bring you physical nourishment. I still remember the friend who brought a pot of delicious cauliflower soup one day. Soup was the best. Joe, my hubby was also a great "soup-cooker." So I was blessed.
But discouragement often set it, and I searched for nourishment for my mind. Someone came and brought me "soup" of a different kind. It was a book called, Chicken Soup for the Surviving Soul. It's one of the string of Chicken Soup books on the market and this one is filled with stories of cancer "battlers" and survivors.
The stories gave me what I needed most: hope and courage. I learned that our mindset plays an important role in the healing of our bodies. Mind, soul and body are intricately woven together. The thoughts we think, the emotions we feel, affect the body. We can choose to move toward health - wholeness.
One story stands out. Two oncologists were comparing notes. Dr. A. had many more patients who became well than Dr. B. had. They both treated their patiens with the same mix of four drugs. "What are you doing that I am not doing?" asked Dr. B. "I tell my patients that I'm giving them H.O.P.E." Dr. A replied, "by giving them the names of the drugs in that order." This doctor helped his patients develop a positive mindset, and many became well.
Our spirits and souls also need nourishment. When I was going through a time of grief some years earlier, Psalm 84 was of help to me. The Psalmist said that pilgrims who were going through a deep valley, needed to make it a place of springs. "Dig wells for yourselves." was the idea. What sort of "well" can you dig for yourself today? What kind thing can you do for yourself today that will make this journey a bit easier? If you can't find or dig a "well," my prayer for you is that there'll be someone who can do it for you. Sometimes all we need to do is ask! Angie BACK TO" "Archives"
