Her name is Hope. She has breast cancer. As the webs of this disease engulf her,
she dons her old frayed robe. The robe hides her disfigured breasts. Her name is
Hope and she has hope. The lump was found early. Cancer isn't a death sentence
anymore. She has a loving, supportive family and friends. She is confident she
will get through this. Hope has a Christian faith and believes all will be well
regardless.
When I started this piece, I didn't know who Hope was but I knew I wanted to create
her. As I worked, I found I had cancer again after 19 years. Work on Hope continued
in between medical appointments and surguries. I was discouraged because some of
the pieces broke free of the confines of the webbing. I couldn't seem to give up on
her. Then I discovered who she was and it all made sense. We were both unraveling
but not undone. Her look of serenity gives me courage. The jewel tones brighten my
spirit. The stained glass reminds me of my faith. May the 1/9 women who contract
this disease find something in their daily lives to give them Hope.
