"A Thankful Heart is a Happy Heart"
It's July 1st week-end and there's a fair down by the beach - rides and games
and treats for a little girl. Until Grandma runs out of money. We had tucked
enough in our pockets to pay for lunch, a couple of rides and games, and then
our pockets were empty and the pleading began. "One more, one more."
We walked home and I reminded her of her favourite Veggie Tale movie,
"Madame Blueberry." Madame was always "blue", always wanting and shopping
for more until she saw a family with very little, yet they were so happy!
"I want what they have," Madame said, "In which aisle is it?"
The family sang a little song for her that explained their secret.
"A Thankful Heart is a Happy Heart."
So, as we walked, we made up our own song, "Thank you for the rides, thank you
for the games, and thank you for the big plate of nachos we ate." Soon the
little girl was skipping ahead of me, inventing a game of her own, riding
a horse, selling vegetables door to door, collecting immaginary money hidden
in front yards.
I remember so well, while on chemo, the day Ophrah challenged me to keep a
gratitude journal. List five things every day for which you are thankful.
Some days they were very small things, like a cup of tea, or a soft pillow.
But a change occurs in our reality when we "count our blessings."
My prayer for you is that in the midst of your pain, you will find little
"haunts of happiness" and that you'll be able to concentrate on those in
order to make your heart a little happier.
God bless!
