The Shelter of His Presence

In the shelter of your presence you hide them from the intrigues of men...(Psalm 31:20).

As the idea of shelter occupies my mind, a childhood memory suddenly surfaces.
I was a pre-schooler and Mom had taken me along to the “big city” for a day of
visiting and shopping. We were on the market square when the earsplitting hi-low
wail of the siren began. People scurried away like ants. “We have to run,” Mom said,
grasping my hand. We ran and descended stairs to a bomb shelter—a dark damp trough-like
space below the ground with an opening at each end. People crowded in. I huddled close
to Mom; the warmth of her body penetrated mine, comforted me; I felt safe in the crook
of her arm. My feelings of safety came not from the cement enclosure, as at that point
in World War II I knew little of bombers and bombs. My safety came from being in my
Mom’s presence. I was only a child, she was Mom, she was strong, and I was safe.

And so it is with our Father. He is strong. He shelters us from the intrigues of men.
The word "intrigue" here does not mean something interesting or novel, it rather speaks
of the kind of “intrigue” Joseph’s brothers plotted as they planned to take his life. Yet
Joseph, also, was sheltered. God’s hand was on his life.

May you sense the shelter of his presence in your life today.
